Ground Conditions

Reported on Tuesday, April 23, 2024

Time: At the summit around 0600
Snow above: no snow observed
Route taken: PyG path
Next report: Friday 26-4-2024

No snow 23-4-2024

Conditions
No snow was observed during today's observations.

A misty and damp start to the morning, with a light breeze.

Essential equipment
Seasonally appropriate walking equipment, including lighting (such as a headlamp).

Carrying snow goggles (such as ski goggles) will protect the eyes from cold winds and wind blown snow, making it easier to see in order to travel more safely on the mountain.

Carrying an ice axe and some form of crampons will give options to stay safe on the mountain if snow or ice develops (see below).

Additional information
On the day of Tuesday's report the forecast suggests temperatures at the summit will be close to freezing for most of the period until Friday's next report, but colder overnight, especially towards the end the week. The temperature at the summit is forecast to be as low as -3˚C (feeling as low as -8˚C).

Significant snow does not look likely to develop from the forecast, but with temperatures below freezing, and a shower or two possible there is a possibility of some snow at times. With temperatures forecast a few degrees below freezing there is also the possibility of some ice on the mountain. The possibility of ice (or snow) appears most likely on Thursday night and Friday morning, and it may therefore be worth keeping an eye on the latest forecasts.
